Does Schisandra Chinensis Increase Performance?

This herb originated from ancient Chinese medicine where it was used as a tonic with a host of proclaimed benefits including immune enhancement and stress protection. One recent study in rats shows it can control cortisol and blood glucose inceases during combined psychological / physical stress. There are also claims that it may help protect the liver from toxins. The extract is derived from the berry of the schisandra chinesis vine, and its principle active components are believed to be a variety of lignans which have potent antioxidant properties. Some athletes believe this product may help support endurance and aid in recovery from intense training. Supposedly there was a study on athletes which showed performance benefits, but I could not find any information on it. Typical dosages appear to be 100-200 mg of the extract a day, or 1-6 grams of the straight berry fruit.
