Politics In Judging
QUESTION: Do you think the Mr. Olympia is fixed? And how is it that MuscleTech is the headline sponsor of the Olympia show every single year and by coincidence Jay Cutler always wins the Olympia? Also, if you were judging these shows would you "call it as you see it" like you seem to always claim you do or would you also "play the politics" like so many others. What's the deal Scott?
ANSWER: Your facts are totally wrong! Ultimate Nutrition was the headline sponsor of the Olympia in 2009 and I actually hung out in their VIP box to watch the show! Jay Cutler lost the Olympia title that night and MuscleTech was not the headline sponsor that year. In 2010, Jay won the title and MuscleTech was not the headline sponsor for the show that year. What's also important to note is that in 2010, Jay also left Weider Publications to join Team Muscular Development and he still won the show! There is no such things as "fixing" the Mr. Olympia. I take a very harsh stance against those that criticize the competence of the judges and industry icons like Steve Weinberger and Jim Manion or those that cry politics. In my books, these guys have lived and breathed the industry for so many years and have forgotten more about judging a physique than I or almost anyone will ever know! I don't feel confident in my skill in judging a physique (or doing open heart surgery for that matter) so I trust in the experts in their respective fields to make the call on what they're trained in. In my books, as fans we need to just sit back and let the judges do what they've had years of training to do. Every bodybuilder is an "armchair contest judge" that thinks they know more about judging than the professional judges! It's really hilarious when you think of it. Nothing urks me more than when you ask the guy that goes to the Olympia expo during the day to get free supplements and their photo taken with some hot fitness bimbo, what they thought of the Olympia placings and they pipe up with their "top 3" and insist that they are right and the judges are wrong!
