Gainer Causing Diarrhea

QUESTION: When I drink BSN'S TRUE MASS, I get diarrhea and need to sprint to the bathroom before I shit my pants! Should I switch to straight whey protein?

ANSWER: First of all, BSN Is a well established, top selling supplement company and they sell a ton of TRUE MASS. I know a few guys that have used it and they haven't complained of this. Assuming you’ve got a normal, healthy gut and that you aren’t taking it before training, it may have something to do with how you’re preparing your shakes. You may be mixing your shakes too thick (i.e., not using enough water). Everyone’s gut has a different tolerance for the concentration (or “osmolality”) of nutrient particles in liquids. Mixing your shakes too thick would result in a rapid transfer of fluid to the stomach and intestines to try to equalize the osmolality with the surrounding environment. This can cause bloating and discomfort (and, in extreme cases, the projectile shit you’re describing). So try adding extra water. As for your question, you have two simple choices if you want to gain weight—either eat more food or use a gainer (or other high-calorie supplement). Remember, the single most important determinant of whether you gain weight is calorie balance. To gain, you have to eat more than you burn—and if you’re a hard-gainer, a lot more! Gainers generally have the advantage of being more convenient, costing less, and having higher-quality protein and other nutrients than comparable meals.
