Cut Sugar Cravings With Gum

QUESTION: Do you have any tricks to help control carb and sugar cravings while I’m dieting?

ANSWER: Probably the simplest trick is one passed down to me from our very own Lyle McDonald. He recommended consuming sugar-free candy and gum. They aren’t calorie free, and bodybuilders who chow down massive amounts of them end up getting a considerable number of calories. But many times all that’s needed to stop a sugar craving is just a little taste of something sweet. Some feel that the amino acid glutamine helps with sugar cravings too. I also find that, for a lot of people, cravings are as much psychological as biological—dieters want something simply because it’s forbidden. Allowing the occasional cheat meal or implementing refeeds often goes a long way toward preventing cravings and binge-eating. Another option are some of the new fat-burning gums and caffeine-enhanced gums you see on the market (pictured above). You get all the sweetness of ordinary sugar-free gum with added functional ingredients that help boost performance. Many years ago, top supplement company ABB made a "Speed Stack Gum" that was one of my favourites!
