Under Construction - Movie Review
Under Construction: Movie Review
“I don’t agree with limits. And I don’t agree with setting them. Find them.”
Dave Crosland
Under Construction is an honest, brutal and sometimes humorous account of one man's experiment to push his body to its absolute size limit via weight lifting, food and steroids.
You know that a movie is going to be good, or at least interesting and thought provoking, when the protagonist’s heroes are Greg Kovacs and Phil Hill – two of the biggest dudes to ever set foot on the IFBB Pro stage. Dave Crosland’s life is nothing short of interesting and thought provoking. That is to say, this guy is a freak.
He’s a sketch artist who specializes in animal art work. He eats between 7,000 and 10,000 calories per day. He has a devoted girlfriend. He takes Testosterone, Trenbolone, Anavar, Novaldex, Proviron, HcG, and T3. Daily. These are all facts Dave shares openly with the viewers.
Dave is BRUTALLY honest with his steroid use throughout the film, both the emotional/psychological and physical components of using gear. It’s one of the reasons the film garnered so much attention in the first place. Once upon a time, Dave proclaimed on his social media that he was going to make it his year’s mission to get up to 350lb. He would talk about his steroid cycles openly and honesty with his Facebook followers. This goal grabbed the attention of film-maker James Grealish, who captured the last weeks of Dave’s “experiment” in “Under Construction.” He explores Dave's quest to become a mammoth of a human-being with exceptional cinematograhy, a stellar soundtrack, and segments captured through Dave's own eyes via a video journal. I highly recommend this documentary to bodybuilders of all shapes and sizes, as it truly explores the human condition, and what it means to LITERALLY take the words "body building" to their absolute limits.
