Chew gum to kill cravings

Does chewing gum help you eat less because it suppresses your appetite, or does the flavour take care of your craving? In one study, researchers from Glasgow found that after 60 test subjects ate 25 percent of their daily calories at lunch, those who chewed gum immediately after the meal ate 36 fewer calories 3 hours later (at snack time) than those who didn’t chew. What’s significant about this study isn’t so much the 36-calorie number, but rather, the conclusion that chewing gum reduced their cravings and their likelihood of snacking. If you’re prepping for a contest, or even just trying to lose a few pounds, every little bit helps!

Breakfast is not the most important meal of the day

The fallacy of not skipping breakfast if you want to lose weight came after researchers in the 1970s gave a group of subjects one meal per day (enough to maintain their weight); the subjects who ate at night maintained their weight, and subjects who ate in the morning lost weight. Everyone concluded that breakfast was imperative for weight loss. Researchers since then, however, took into account body composition, and divided women into AM calorie-heavy meals and PM calorie-heavy meals (they were all on the same calories per day). They found that if you want to drop weight but preserve muscle mass, you should eat a light breakfast and eat the majority of your calories in the evening.

Another fat-loss flower found in Asia

Hibiscus tea is famous around the world for its positive effects on cardiac and blood vessel health. Recently, though, it’s been found in animal studies to cause weight loss. Researchers in Taiwan wanted to test its fat-burning properties on humans. Thirty six people took 2,700 milligrams of Hibiscus sabdariffa extract every day for 12 weeks. Subjects lost just over two pounds (every little bit helps, right?). One of hibiscus’ components inhibits the conversion of carbohydrates into absorbable glucose. This same ingredient is the active ingredient in Garcinia cambogia—one of the hottest fat-loss supplements out there now! So jump on the hibiscus bandwagon now before it gets full.
