Is Deep Tissue Massage Dangerous?

Q: IFBB pros Jay Cutler and Fouad Abiad use deep tissue massage therapy. I’ve heard that it’s unnecessary and may be harmful. What’s your opinion on deep tissue massage?

A: With hardcore bodybuilding, the training can cause various types of stress on different tissues, potentially causing injury. If you’re bodybuilding, you should always think of the four systems you’re stressing, which are the muscle/tendon structures, joint/ligament structures, nervous system, and biochemical/hormonal system. If you have a muscle/tendon injury, deep tissue massage is excellent. If you have a joint/ligament injury such as a lumbar facet joint injury, deep tissue massage is less effective, and the chiropractic adjustment or physiotherapy mobilization would be more effective to restore normal joint motion and function. So it’s not a case of what works and what doesn’t. All treatments work. They just have to be used at the right time, on the right injury, by the right health practitioner. That is why all the top bodybuilders have a team of health professionals.
