QUESTION: Chad Nicholls said in an interview that taking creatine in the days leading up to a show may cause water retention below the skin in some athletes. What do you think?
ANSWER: I agree with Chad. Creatine causes cellular swelling, which is normally great because drawing water inside muscle cells causes a great anabolic environment for growth and has been linked to protein synthesis. However, when you’re trying to get superdry and hard, any excess water in the subcutaneous tissue could make you appear smooth. So as a precaution, it’s best to cut out all creatine at least two to three weeks before a show.
