Boussingaultia Gracilis

Q. Everyone seems to be going nuts over D-aspartic acid and geranium, and now that Anthony Roberts prick seems to be pimping out Boussingaultia gracilis as the next ephedrine! What does The Supplement Godfather think?

A. Whether you like Anthony Roberts or not, I can tell you one thing: He knows his stuff! So when he talks about a new ingredient with some promise, I’m inclined to listen. I took an in-depth read of the key studies on Boussingaultia gracilis, and it looks like Mr. Roberts might be on to something here. This ingredient has been used as a Chinese folk medicine for treatment of diabetes, inflammation, and liver disease. However, the more recent studies investigated its anti-obesity and hypolipidemic effects. Although these studies were conducted on rats, the positive results could certainly be translated over to human subjects. In one of the studies, Boussingaultia gracilis treatment significantly lowered body weight gain, fat-pad weights, and serum and hepatic lipid levels in obese rats. Also, the lipid droplets in liver tissue of boussingaultia-treated rats were also much smaller when compared to the placebo group. The researchers explained that boussingaultia can support fat loss and help protect the liver through regulation of expression of genes involved in lipolysis and lipogenesis (which means fat buildup and breakdown). It certainly is an ingredient with unique properties, considering that it can improve fat loss and protect the health of the liver at the same time. Over the past few years, several weight-loss drugs have been linked to liver health problems. With such positive results, I’m sure a human study is just around the corner. Or perhaps Roberts will decide to test it out on himself.
