Surviving The E Hangover

Q. Sometimes my friends and I take ecstasy and dance our asses off all night. I always look shredded the next day. Does E burn fat, or is it mostly dehydrating me? Does 5-HTP help with the E hangover?

A. There’s no doubt that if you dance your ass off all night long, you’re going to increase calorie expenditure and burn more fat—but at what cost?

First, when most people take E, they completely lose their appetites and can’t eat a thing for several hours or sometimes even days. So, there’s a great chance you’ll be burning away some hard-earned muscle at the same time as you’re burning fat. And yes, you’re right about the dehydration too, which is the main reason that you look so ripped the next day. Ecstasy or MDMA (the main ingredient in ecstasy) will cause some serious dehydration, which is why people tend to drink a lot of water while they’re on it.

MDMA cranks serotonin levels through the roof, and that’s why users feel happy. Over-elevated serotonin levels also cause an increase in “energy,” which is why you can dance your ass off! A lot of ecstasy pills are also made with mega-doses of ephedrine, speed, or other amphetamines, which also contributes to their overstimulating and calorie-burning effects. To be frank, you really have no idea what you’re getting when you pop E. I would be very cautious.

Regarding the E hangover, there’s not too much you can do. When you come down, your serotonin levels will also take a nosedive, and this will make you feel shitty. A supplement such as 5-HTP just isn’t strong enough to get your serotonin levels back to normal right away. I strongly urge you to consider not taking E in the future, especially considering the recent deaths in Calgary and Vancouver from tainted pills.
