Green supplements

Q: What are some “superfood” ingredients that I should look out for in a greens product?

A: There are a lot of great ingredients that can be included in greens products, but here’s the lowdown on some of my favourites.

SPIRULINA

Spirulina is a blue-green algae and one of the most well-known super
green foods in the world. It provides a high-protein content and all the
essential amino acids. It contains a wide array of fatty acids, including
arachidonic acid (AA), alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), docosahexaenoic
acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), gamma-linolenic acid
(GLA), linoleic acid (LA), and stearidonic acid (SDA). Spirulina contains various vit-amins, including vitamins A, B, C, D, E, and K, and a full spectrum of minerals. Research suggests that spirulina can help maintain a healthy immune system and body and even has potent antioxidant properties.

WHEATGRASS
Many consider this to be the king of all super green foods. It contains
high amounts of chlorophyll and can act as a powerful detoxifying agent.

BARLEY GRASS

The combination of nutrients and enzymes found in barley grass make
it one of the best super green foods. It delivers various nutrients, including high amounts of vitamins and enzymes.

SPINACH

pinach contains vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, magnesium, zinc, and
selenium, and researchers have identified more than a dozen different
flavonoid compounds in spinach that have health-promoting functions.
Spinach is also one of the most alkaline foods on the planet!

ALFALFA
Alfalfa contains a unique amino acid called L-canavanine, which has various effects in the body and can help support a healthy immune system. Alfalfa also contains various other compounds such as triterpene glycosides and isoflavonoids that have health-promoting properties.

CHLORELLA
Chlorella is a single-celled freshwater green algae. This plant is a rich
source of chlorophyll and contains significant amounts of protein, fatty
acids, fibre, nucleic acids, vitamins, and minerals. Chlorella can have
various effects in the body and, just like spirulina, can also support a
healthy immune system.

PARSLEY

Parsley contains volatile oils and flavonoids. These two unique types of
compounds provide health benefits. Parsley also provides vitamin C and B vitamins.
