Garcinia Cambogia (HCA) For Fat Loss
Q: I think Garcinia Cambogia (HCA) has been around for years, but now my girlfriend wants to start using it to lose weight because she saw it on the Dr. Oz show. How does it work?
A: Garcinia has been around for years, but Dr. Oz did recommend it on his TV show, so its popularity has skyrocketed recently. There’s a phytochemical found in garcinia called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) that has a dual effect on supporting weight loss. HCA has the ability to reduce appetite by increasing serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that affects mood and sleep patterns. Increasing serotonin levels can decrease food intake, enhance mood, and lower weight gain. So, by increasing serotonin levels, HCA reduces one’s desire to overeat. It’s especially effective at reducing hunger cravings associated with stress and emotional eating. Garcinia can also support weight loss by inhibiting an enzyme called ATP-citratelyase. This enzyme helps convert excess carbs into fat in the body.
When HCA inhibits ATP-citrate-lyase, fat buildup and storage is blocked in the body. As an added health benefit, blocking this enzyme can also reduce the production of LDL (“bad cholesterol”) and triglycerides. The best time to take garcinia is 15 to 30 minutes before meals. The recommended dose is 500 to 1,500 milligrams, up to three times daily. Most people find that garcinia is most effective when taken before the three main meals of the day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). Remember, to get the best results from garcinia, make sure that you’re using an extract standardized for a high percentage of HCA, 50 to 60 percent being the ideal amount.
