Does Cold-Fx Really Work?

Q. What’s your opinion of COLD-FX? Does it really fight off a cold, or is it all just hype?

A. COLD-FX is a pretty solid product, in my opinion. The research backs it up too. COLD-FX is made up of one ingredient, North American ginseng. It’s standardized for 80 percent poly-furanosyl-pyranosyl-saccharides, which is the active compound that delivers the product’s beneficial effects. The maker of COLD-FX, Afexa Life Sciences Inc., is an Alberta-based firm, and it dumped a lot of money into its research and development.

Throughout the development of COLD-FX, Afexa funded several research studies that put COLD-FX to the test. The largest was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted on 323 healthy adults aged 18 to 65. Throughout the four-month study, 200 milligrams of COLD-FX (one capsule) was taken twice daily and was found to reduce the relative risk of recurrent colds by 56 percent, the severity of cold symptoms by 31 percent, and the duration of symptoms by 35 percent. Not too shabby! Blood samples were also collected in the study and showed that COLD-FX treatment increased the number of T-helper and natural killer (NK) cells, which means greater immune system strength.

In another randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, subjects who consumed COLD-FX twice daily for four months reduced the relative risk and duration of respiratory illness by up to 55 percent. During the last two months of this study, significantly fewer subjects in the COLD-FX group reported respiratory illness symptoms compared to the placebo group. Also, the duration of symptoms was significantly shorter in the COLD-FX treatment group at only 5.6 days compared to the placebo group at 12.6 days.

In fact, COLD-FX has been so successful that pharmaceutical giant Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. (formerly known as Biovail Research), recently acquired Afexa Life Sciences and merged the company into its corporate organization.
Although COLD-FX isn’t a miracle cure for a cold or flu, it can certainly be a very effective preventative medicine. I like to use to use this product during cold and flu season or times of high stress when my immune system might need a little extra boost.
