Curcumin

Q. What supplement developments are coming in 2013? Anything you think bodybuilders and other athletes should be excited about? Tell me, Godfather, I want a prediction!

A. Well I can’t reveal all my secrets, or else I’d be out of business very soon! But all joking aside, one of the hottest ingredients in 2013 will undoubtedly be curcumin. Although curcumin isn’t necessarily a new ingredient, the research being conducted on it is definitely groundbreaking, and just about everyone, including athletes and bodybuilders, can benefit from it!

In 2012, the U.S. National Institutes of Health has registered 71 clinical trials completed or underway to study the use of curcumin for a variety of clinical disorders. Curcumin is what I call one of nature’s “all-in-one miracle” supplements. Curcumin is the active compound found in turmeric and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. Many people are familiar with curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties as it’s found in many joint supplements, but the new research looks at a whole range of new benefits.

In addition to its anti-inflammatory properties, curcumin also exhibits chemopreventive and growth inhibitory activity against several tumor cell lines. Some of the newer research even suggests it can have antioxidant, immunostimulatory, cardioprotective, and cognitive health benefits! The only issue with curcumin is its bioavailability. It appears to have low oral bioavailability, but scientists are working on a solution for that problem. Stay tuned for research updates on this ingredient in 2013!
