Pharmafreak Athlete Anth Bailes showing how hardcore Vegan Freak can be!

PharmaFreak Vegan Freak

With a name like “PharmaFreak,” it’s hard to picture them coming out with a supplement that isn’t insanely freakish and hardcore. And yet, they’ve already managed two! Recently, PharmaFreak introduced Greens Freak to the market. Greens Freak was PharmaFreak’s foray into the organic, natural superfood market, and they hit the nail on the head. So they took it a step further, and came out with Vegan Freak, a hybrid vegan protein supplement. Just because it’s vegan doesn’t mean it’s tame. In fact, Vegan Freak is like a veggie protein on steroids! PharmaFreak has a great reputation for putting out products backed by solid science, so branching out with Vegan Freak and Greens Freak was a risk, but yet again, they nailed it.

Vegan Freak Is a Hybrid Protein

Hybrid means “a thing made by combining two different elements.” If we take this literally, PharmaFreak’s Vegan Freak combines an Organic & Natural Vegan Protein Blend with a Vegan Superfoods Support Blend. This one-two punch makes Vegan Freak the ultimate healthy protein hybrid! The 28-gram scoop in Vegan Freak comes with three different protein sources and three different types of superfoods.

Vegan Freak’s Transparent Labeling

PharmaFreak has broken down the macronutrients in Vegan Freak as follows: 20 grams of protein, 5 grams of carbohydrates (including 2 grams of fibre), 2 grams of fat, and a total of 118 calories. What we love about the label, however, is that it’s fully transparent—nothing is hidden. The Vegan Freak label includes doses for each of the protein sources in its protein blends and each ingredient in its superfood blend. Yellow pea protein makes up the majority at 21.02 grams (80 percent total protein), organic hemp protein at 5.4 grams (50 percent), and sacha inchi protein at 1 gram (55 percent). Vegan Freak included sacha inchi not only because the plant contains 60 to 65 percent protein but also because it contains a mix of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to give your body the essential fatty acids (EFAs) needed for maximum hormone support, muscle growth, eicosanoid production, fat-soluble vitamin absorption, cholesterol support, and a host of other health effects. This ingredient is very scarce as there’s a limited supply globally and it comes all the way from Peru. PharmaFreak included sacha inchi in Vegan Freak to complement pea and hemp protein. Sacha inchi was likely added as more of a complementary protein than a stand-alone protein source.

Vegan Freak Under the Microscope
PharmaFreak’s protein sources include pea and hemp. If you’re a vegan, you already know that both are great sources of protein, iron, glutamine, and BCAAs, and they make the texture of the shake a lot smoother, creamier, and easily digestible. If you’re not vegan and you just want an alternative, easy-to-digest protein power, this formula is awesome.

In the second part of the label, Vegan Freak breaks down its superfood blend, all 375 milligrams of it, which is made up of the following ingredients:

1. Chia Powder: This tiny little seed packs a huge punch! It carries heart-healthy fats, contains fibre, and boasts a ton of calcium, manganese, and phosphorus, all of which are important minerals and nutrients. Oh, and did we mention chia seeds have protein too? Each serving of Vegan Freak contains 300 milligrams of chia powder.

2. Hawaiian Spirulina: Spirulina is known as one of the world’s best superfoods, and the Hawaiian strain is one of the most potent types! Spirulina is an excellent source of vitamins A, K1, K2, B12 and iron, manganese, and chromium. It also contains phytonutrients to help protect your cellular health, and strengthen your immune system. Each serving of Vegan Freak contains 25 milligrams of spirulina.

Nova Scotia Dulse: Dulse is an edible seaweed containing strong antioxidative properties, high polyphenol contents, and a high concentration of EPA and DHA, which are omega-3 fatty acids most commonly found in fish. It has an optimal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3  fatty acids, as well! Each serving of Vegan Freak contains 25 milligrams of Nova Scotia dulse.

Organic and Natural Non-Medicinal Ingredients: This aspect of the formula in Vegan Freak is also labeled and broken down clearly—i.e., exactly 25 milligrams of kelp powder, stevia, natural flavour and cocoa, and natural guar gum. There’s literally nothing else in Vegan Freak except what’s on the label.

How to Take Vegan Freak
One scoop once per day, that’s all it takes. The ingredients in PharmaFreak’s Vegan Freak have a wide array of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, fibre, and antioxidants, and they’ve chosen doses that’ll help take care of your health! The 20 grams of protein per scoop is sufficient for your post-workout needs, or as an addition to your breakfast in the morning. PharmaFreak suggests mixing this with water, almond or hemp milk, or juice prior to consumption. Keep in mind that Vegan Freak comes in natural dark chocolate flavour, so it has a stronger cocoa flavour than the other chocolates you may be used to. It’s a true dark chocolate flavour, so it’s not as sweet.

Final Thoughts on Vegan Freak

We’re not usually ones to go straight for the vegan proteins at a supplement store, but we’ll be honest—the ingredient profile and the fact that we know and love PharmaFreak made us take a second look. Change is good for the body, and many athletes we meet are finding that too much whey, dairy, meat, and fish can often be hard on the digestive system over time. Giving your muscles and gastrointestinal system a break by picking an easy-to-break-down, easy-to-absorb protein such as PharmaFreak’s Vegan Freak when you want to change it up is a good call. You don’t have to be a vegetarian to use this product; it’s a perfect addition to any supplement stack. Stack it with whey if you want to get all the benefits of whey and the benefits of Vegan Freak, or take it on its own.

The taste is great, it’s easy to digest, and it’s well priced, which makes it a great product to add to your supplement treasure chest! We confidently give Vegan Freak a solid five-star rating. *****
