Mama T's Protein Cookies Product Review

Company:
Mama T's

Find us one person who doesn’t love cookies. We’ll wait.

Okay, we can’t wait forever.

Now that we’ve agreed that everyone loves cookies, we sadly admit that most cookies don’t have the best macronutrient profile. Knowing that our readers are devoted to ensuring that the majority of their diet is made up of healthful foods, but still love cookies, we’re always looking for a compromise. And we’ve found one! Mama T has been busy baking a delicious solution for those times you’re craving dessert but are still mindful enough to not totally go overboard on refined sugar and fat.

Mama T’s Protein Cookies deliver everything you could want from a cookie, while keeping your healthy priorities in mind. There are four amazing flavours to choose from: Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Macaroon, Walnut Carrot Cake, and Ultimate Peanut Butter. Whether you love chocolate or are looking for something nuttier, Mama T has an option. And we promise, they all deliver flavours true to their names.

Fresh Out of the Oven

These thick, fluffy cookies are reminiscent of homemade treats. While most cookies are thinner with some crispness to them, the chewy texture of Mama T’s cookies still screams “home-baked” to our testing panel. As a nod to the quality, you can see and taste the whole grain oats that make up the base of these cookies and is what makes them so satisfying.

By the Numbers

Though each of the four flavours has a slightly different macronutrient count, they’re in the same ballpark. Each cookie is 100 grams and comes in between 280 and 360 calories, with oatmeal chocolate chip being the most calorie-dense. On average, they break down as around 40 percent carbs, 30 percent fat, and 30 percent protein.

Obviously, the main feature of these treats compared to traditional cookies is the protein content. Averaging 20 grams of protein per cookie, they will leave you feeling more satisfied than other protein snacks. As an added bonus, the protein comes from totally recognizable forms: whey powder and eggs.

For staying power, a moderate amount of fat is found in each cookie. With a profile of healthier sources of fat, you can feel good about this. Around half of the fat content comes from saturated fats, which are derived from animal sources such as butter. These fats help the body by raising levels of HDL, “the good” cholesterol. The other half of the fat content comes from unsaturated sources, including polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. When it comes to the omegas, Mama T’s does a good job of keeping omega-6 fats lower, offering more omega-3s in the recipe.

When it comes to carbs, the cookies average 32 grams of carbs, with the chocolate macaroon flavour coming in at the highest (at 41 grams). There’s a decent serving of fibre in each of the cookies, but the best part is that it comes from natural nutritional sources. Read between the lines: These protein-packed snacks won’t leave you feeling bloated or dealing with unpleasant digestive side effects!

A big bonus of these treats is that a serving size is a whole cookie—not half or a quarter—the whole (giant) cookie. If you want to eat the entire cookie in one sitting (remember, they’re 100 grams and pretty dense), you don’t have to do any math to figure out what you’ve eaten. If you find them filling and feel satisfied after half of one, simply cut the numbers in half and you can quickly plan the rest of your day’s food around it.

The List

A very welcome sight on the Mama T’s label is the ingredient list. It is short and to the point, and only contains items we all know (and can pronounce). Ingredients such as whole grain oats, eggs, flax meal, and sea salt form the base of these cookies. Specific to their own flavours, items such as dark chocolate, cocoa powder, unsweetened coconut, walnuts, and carrots are added to make each tasty in a natural way. There isn’t a single unknown ingredient in these bad boys!

Sweet, Naturally

It should come as a relief to our readers that these cookies rely on naturally sweet ingredients, not refined sugar, to curb your sweet tooth. Vanilla or coconut extract, unpasteurized honey, dark chocolate, or carrots account for the sugar on the nutrition facts table, but are much healthier ways to add sweetness to your life. Who says desserts need to be full of refined sugar? Not Mama T!
