UPDATE: Jodi Boam Out of Olympia Due to Injury
We first reported on Jodi’s injury during her announcement to Bob Chicerillo, and the world, on the Olympia stage that she had to pull out of doing her fitness routine. For the original report click here.
We now have an update as to what exactly happened straight from Jodi:
“So what the hell happened to me and why did I pull out of the Olympia??
About 2 weeks ago during my routine practice, I had a bad landing and rolled my ankle really hard. I stayed stubborn for a few days thinking I’d be fine, but once I realized it was more than just a sprain, I went Xrays - sent the images to 2 separate ankle surgeons, both confirming I have fractured my ankle on both sides. Yup, I have 2 fractures in my ankle, and my stubborn ass was somehow still convinced I’d still compete.I stayed completely focused on prep. I trained like usually (minus my routine and only bike for cardio), dieted like nothing happened (except tripled my fish oil lol), and flew out to Vegas ready to hit the stage.
For my routine, I listened to my song over and over and did my best to visualize and recreate the skills to make it easier and remove any hard jumps or landings. I had convinced myself I can make it work!! However, I knew in my heart it MIGHT not happen. I decided that I would make the official call during my routine warmup on show day, after seeing what I can or can not do. Turns out, I really couldn’t do anything. A simple cartwheel hurt, even a certain type of push-up hurt. .
About 45 mins before show time, I had to tell an official I was out. I couldn’t make it work. I was beyond devastated when this reality hit. I had stayed so mentally focused and so convinced I could I do it, that once it sunk in that I will not be performing at this years Olympia, I was completely crushed. .
This was probably one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make, but I know in my heart it was definitely the smartest choice. I decided to protect my future in this sport and not risk making it worse, rather than having my “2 minutes of fame” to perform a routine I couldn’t do 100% anyway. .
I have zero regrets. The amount of mental and physical strength I gained through this experience is unbelievable. Thank you to so many who helped make this weekend so special and memorable for me. I am so grateful for the love and support I received the past few days. Truly can’t put into words what you all mean to me.
All I can now say is:
Olympia 2020.... I’m coming for you.”
We wish you a speedy recovery Jodi and can't wait to see you grace the stage in 2020!
