Scott Welch Interviewed on the Stimulated Podcast
By Roger Lockridge
Very few people are considered unanimously as experts or authorities on different subjects. When it comes to sports nutrition and the supplement industry, one person who is universally looked to as an authority is Scott Welch. Many people know him as the publisher of Muscle Insider, but his real expertise is in sports supplements, where he has helped more than 40 companies with formulations and marketing! Scott Welch joined the Stimulated podcast to talk with host Luke Lazenby, who is the top affiliate marketing expert in the supplement industry. Luke cut his teeth in the supplement industry working for Redcon1, where he headed up their Tier Operator affiliate program, which he built to over 7,500 members strong! Scott and Luke share war stories about what goes on behind the scenes at the top supplement companies in the industry and shed light on how COVID-19 has helped and hurt the supplement game.
In this episode, Scott explains why businesses must place their emphasis on what matters most, the consumer. Although the number of companies promoting products is fluctuating daily, he reminds all of them that the person spending the hard-earned money is the focus. He also expresses that competition for their attention is empowering consumers and finally putting them in the driver’s seat.
“For the consumer, competition brings more opportunities for better products because they’re all fighting harder for your dollars, and they’re working harder for that.”
Objectively speaking, Scott Welch has made a profound impact on the supplement industry in his own right. There’s something to be said for being directly involved with major brands and working to create the products that consumers will use to help reach their fitness goals. When asked about which supplement company he felt he had the most impact on, he was quick to answer that this would be MuscleTech, where he worked early on in his career and at a point in time when it was a small company.
“I was with MuscleTech for six and a half years. So, we grew that to number one globally, and you know what? I have to say that for me, this was one of the best accomplishments for me in my career because I was reporting directly to the owner and working all the way up.”
Some of the other brands that Scott has worked for include Designer Whey, VPX/Bang Energy, GAT, Nutrex, Ultimate Nutrition, Mutant, Olimp, Perfect Sports, Inner Armour and many more.
As a matter of fact, he has never worked outside of the supplement or fitness industries! Obviously, lessons are learned along a journey like that, and he was quick to share one that could benefit many people, including a younger version of Welch himself.
“What I would pass on to people is to try to make a living from your hobby. Try to make a career from your hobby, and if you look at it, that doesn’t mean that if you’re a bodybuilder that you just say ‘okay, I’m going to become a pro, and then I’ll make all kinds of money, and then the prize money is how I pay the bills.’ If you really like exercise, then try to find a way to get paid to teach how to do that. I’ve always had a passion for my hobby, which is bodybuilding.”
This podcast should be appointment listening for everyone working in the sports supplement industry or those who want to get into it. Welch and Lazenby also talk about what’s happened in the supplement industry in North America and overseas, what advantages direct-to-consumer focused supplement companies have over legacy brands that built their businesses using the traditional bricks and mortar store model and more.
