Flex Wheeler Back In Hospital
As many fans know, Flex Wheeler had the lower part of his right leg amputated in October of 2019. Since then we’ve followed Flex rebuilding his body and spirit while leveraging his unfortunate situation to motivate others. We heard rumors that he would be competing again but it looks like his health has now taken a turn for the worse and he’s now back in the hospital.
What Caused Flex Wheeler’s Hospital Visit
Flex has been experiencing “phantom leg pain” which is pain that feels like it's coming from a body part that's no longer there. Doctors once believed this post-amputation phenomenon was a psychological problem, but experts now recognize that these real sensations originate in the spinal cord and brain. According to the Mayo Clinic, a number of other factors are believed to contribute to phantom pain, including damaged nerve endings, scar tissue at the site of the amputation and the physical memory of pre-amputation pain in the affected area. Flex says he’s in constant pain twenty four hours a day. He normally sits at about a 5 to 7 (on a pain scale of 1 to 10), but lately he’s been at a 10 which drove him to check into the hospital for help.
"Well I fought as long and hard as I could not to come back here. But the last few days has been more then I could handle."
-Flex Wheeler
Flex got treatment from the hospital staff to relieve the agony and we’re sure he will fight through this and not let it defeat his spirit. We wish him a speedy recovery during this difficult time.
