Cody Montgomery wins NPC USA - Becomes youngest USA champ
The 2015 NPC USAs, held this past weekend in Las Vegas, NV, was one of the largest to date! There were 800 competitors, and the fields in all of the categories were deep. In one particular category however, there was a favorite going in to the prestigious event. Cody Montgomery was the teen phenom that everyone's been talking about since he burst on to the scene in 2012 as the NPC Teen Nationals winner. He went on to win in the same event in 2013 and 2014 as well, opting not to go for his pro card in 2014 because he didn't feel he was ready for a pro qualifier. At the NPC USAs, all seven of the Men’s Bodybuilding classes are eligible for IFBB Pro cards. The top two in the overall female bodybuilding category are also eligible, as well as the top 2 in Figure, Bikini, Men and Women’s Physique. A total of 53 pro cards were awarded in Vegas!
At the tender age of 20 years, Cody was ready for his pro qualifying moment this year. It was a no-contest in the Heavyweight category once Montgomery stepped on stage. The moment he'd been prepping for since he started weight training in the 7th grade went from fantasty to reality, as he receieved the title of Mr. USA and IFBB Pro. He won his category AND the overall (beating the Superheavyweight winner who had about 20lbs on him!) which makes him the youngest bodybuilder of all time to win the overall title at a pro qualifier event - This kid didn't just win, he OWNED it!
Cody joins some impressive bodybuilders who have also won NPC USA titles:
Phil Heath (2005)
Melvin Anthony (1999)
Flex Wheeler (1992)
Chris Cormier (1993)
Look for big things from this kid! Hopefully he doesn't take a year off, and instead, just tries his physique with the big boys in the IFBB division! Maybe we'll even see him in the 212 division... who knows?! There's nothing Cody can't do!
