Under Construction Part 2: A Movie Review
Dave “The Freak” Crosland, in his last-ever big cycle, attempts to push his body beyond its physical limit by embarking on a 12-week experiment to increase his muscularity to a body weight of over 400 pounds via weight lifting, steroids, and huge amounts of food, putting his health, well-being, and, this time, even his personal relationships on the line. The movie "Under Construction: Part 2" chronicles that journey.
Along the way, Dave examines the darkest unseen corners of steroid use, body dysmorphia, and the steroid trade and production in UK and Europe, and meets those who have both suffered and thrived in their pursuits to find physical limits.
His quest to hit 400 pounds continues, but this time, we get down and dirty with Dave Crosland as he takes us far and beyond where we went with Under Construction 1. Dave calls himself a “performance and imagine enhancing drug specialist,” and your guess is as good as mine what exactly this is, but based on what the movie shows, it definitely involves drugs, body dysmorphia, and quantities of food you need to eat with a shovel instead of utensils.
Part 2 of this movie picks up where Part 1 left off, with Dave around the low 390s. He’s doing whatever needs to be done to get there. Dave goes in depth in terms of exactly what drugs he takes, when to take them, how much he takes, and the side effects. He does this for test, tren, GH, and insulin for educational purposes; Dave is very big on educating people, as evidenced by the fact that he exposes the whole world of underground laboratories, and how they compare to pharmaceutical ones. He also goes to see a therapist for his “bigorexia”—the sad part about Dave is that he can see his problem from the outside, but not enough to do anything about it. The goal to get to 400 is just too provocative and intriguing. We’ve all been there. Anyone who’s competed knows the struggle of walking the tightrope between what’s healthy and what we feel we need to do to compete.
Dave’s story, while not common, is still something we can all relate to.
With about 20 minutes left to the movie, Dave finally makes weight. Four hundred pounds on the dot. And … it’s anticlimactic. In his own words, he’s “tired of the weight. Tired of eating. Just tired of it all.” He was subsequently admitted into hospital because his kidneys stopped functioning and he suffered from severe edema (swelling). What happens after, I encourage you to watch the rest of the film to see and understand. Under Construction 2 was exceptionally well put together by James Grealish yet again. I highly recommend you check out Parts 1 and 2 to understand the whole story and see that there’s so much more to the man than just looking like a monster. Althought not all of us are on a quest to get to 400lbs, all hardcore bodybuilders can find a little bit of themselves in Dave; and that's what makes this movie worth checking out!
