The Lowdown On The Beyond Meat Burger
Plant-Based Meatless Patties: A Fad Or A Trend That’s Here to Stay?
The Beyond Meat Burger is here to stay. Sales are absolutely skyrocketing, and the company is having trouble keeping up with demand. There is a global shift towards eating more of a plant-based diet, and this is a great thing for sustainability and the environment. I primarily eat a plant-based diet for ethical and environmental reasons, in addition to the health benefits. I’ve tried the Beyond Meat Burger and Sausages (both Brat Original and Hot Italian), and they all taste absolutely amazing. Some meat eaters I know even prefer to eat a Beyond Meat Burger over a regular beef-based burger.
Beyond Meat burgers are made up of four main ingredients: water, pea protein, canola oil, and coconut oil. They also contain smaller amounts of rice protein, natural flavours, cocoa butter, mung bean protein, methylcellulose, potato starch, apple extract, salt, potassium chloride, vinegar, lemon juice concentrate, sunflower lecithin, pomegranate fruit powder, and beet juice extract.
The Beyond Meat Burger nutrition is pretty similar to a traditional beef patty. It contains 20 grams of protein and 18 grams of fat (a little less fat than a beef burger). However, a traditional beef patty contains almost double the saturated fat, 80 milligrams of cholesterol, and possibly hormones and antibiotics. A traditional beef patty only contains about 12 percent of your daily iron requirements, whereas the Beyond Meat Burger delivers 25 percent. The Beyond Meat Burger is also non-GMO and contains no cholesterol, soy, gluten, hormones, or antibiotics. There’s one other very popular competitor to the Beyond Meat Burger, and that’s the Impossible Burger by Impossible Foods. Beyond Meat’s CEO, Ethan Brown, recently said he was “confident his company could take on competition from Impossible Foods, which relies on genetically modified soy seeds to produce its burger patties, because of consumers’ hesitancy surrounding those technologies.”
If you’re looking for an alternative to a traditional beef burger, I highly recommend you give the Beyond Meat Burger (and sausages) a try! They’re even suitable for those who are following a keto diet—just eat them on their own, chop them up and put them into a salad, or make them into a lettuce wrap.
