Olympia Contest Coverage Sponsored by BODYPRO Gym

As far as Canadian bodybuilding fans are concerned, there's likely no other category that was being more closely watched than that of Men’s Classic Physique. Our Muscle Insider team had the pleasure to watch prejudging of the 2019 Olympia when Chris Bumstead was moved into the center for comparisons. Seeing them move Breon out of the middle and George Peterson left standing to his other side, the audience roared with approval. Bumstead of course went on to win the Mr. Olympia Classic Physique Championship title that year.

Chris Bumstead 2019 & 2020 Classic Physique Olympia Champion

This year we witnessed a fire in Bumstead that we’ve never seen before. All year he had the goal of successfully defending his Olympia title and pursued that goal with laser focus. While it was clear Breon was hungry to get that title back, Chris was not going to let it be easy. If you look at the growth in Chris from year to year, one only needs to look at the improvements made in his back development, to see that Bumstead was not giving up that number one spot.

When it came to the finals stage, we started to see a battle of these champions reminiscent of that between Phil and Kai back in the day. At one point the judges even had to separate Chris and Breon during their comparisons, to ease the tension on stage. Once the dust settled, it was Chris Bumstead that once again was crowned as the Classic Physique Mr. Olympia Champion. While it was a hard-fought contest, there was no denying that Chris earned this second title. We very well could see Chris hold on to this title for many years to come.

Terrence Ruffin

What ended up being the biggest shock of the division, was Terrence Ruffin stealing the runner-up position ahead of Breon Ansley. Big Ruff brought a stellar package, with his signature thick chest, small waist, and killer vacuum pose. We expected to see Terrence make it into the top 5 this year, but we were pleasantly surprised with how much he had improved, even since his 2nd place finish at the 2020 Arnold Classic.

Now don’t start thinking that Breon was off this weekend or was not up to the task. Ansley brought an incredible physique as we expected he would, but it just didn’t match up to the improvements made by his counterparts. Breon’s muscularity and conditioning were on point, but when you think of what Classic Physique is, Bumstead simply has the structure that fits the criteria more than anyone else on that stage. Our team feels after this result, it would not be surprising to see Ansley make the move back to the Men’s 212 Bodybuilding division, or possibly even Men’s Open Bodybuilding.

Alex Cambronero

Alex made some serious improvements to his physique, namely in his arms and legs. This paid off with Alex winning the Arnold Classic earlier this year and moving up from last year’s 6th place Olympia finish to an impressive 4th place at this year’s Olympia.
