Training Shogun Rua

Q. How does the training of “Shogun” Rua or other top MMA fighters that you’ve interviewed or trained differ from some of the top IFBB pros you’ve met or worked with?

A. Training for MMA is heavily based on improving strength, endurance, speed, and technique for a fight. We examine the opponent’s strengths and make his weaknesses the focal point. The MMA fighters I work with are led through a variety of strength-training exercises involving resistance training that encourages explosive power and endurance needed for striking and grappling. Bodybuilding, on the other hand, focuses on building symmetrical muscle mass on all the visible muscle groups. The purpose of muscle development is for show. It involves resistance training that encourages increased size of muscle cells known as muscle hypertrophy. There is one major similarity when it comes to working with both MMA fighters and IFBB pros, and that’s their commitment to being the best.
