Stupidest Pre-Contest Mistake

Q. What is the stupidest pre-contest prep mistake you’ve ever seen?

A. I know these types of questions always get a lot of views. I guess everyone wants to know if bodybuilding is as crazy as GetBig would have their readers believe. Scott has been on me for some time to write up a few good ones so now seems like a good time. I know a very talented National level bodybuilder who did a stunt worthy of the next Jackass movie. I competed against him when he was a Junior. This kid was stacked. Lots of muscle but was just a little too soft when I beat him. He was a typical young bodybuilder. Minimum wage job, scrapping to make ends meet…you know the kind. He was using Winstrol-V for his show (among other goodies). Now this guy was so “frugal” that after injecting the V in his ass he would inject the residual that was in the barrel/syringe back into his bottle of V. Yep, even if there was blood mixed in with the V it would go back into the vial for another shot later in the week. Now, everyone knows (or should know) that water-based steroids are the worst culprits for infections so this scenario could only lead down one path - a trip to the ER – but only after the show. It’s too bad because this kid had it all but was lacking the common sense and knowledge of proper injection techniques. Luckily he recovered but only after spending several days in a hospital bed. He’s competing this year and I expect him to do very well. He really has all the tools to be a top Canadian bodybuilder and I know he has learned his lesson.
