Are Sport Drinks Effective?

QUESTION: Are sport drinks useful and do you really think I should I use them?

ANSWER: Sports drinks can play a positive role in an athlete’s diet and are beneficial for bodybuilders as they provide a source of fuel for working muscle and will speed the absorption of water and glucose. One of the main advantages of sport drinks over sugary drinks, like soda or Kool-Aid is that they contain valuable electrolytes. Electrolytes (potassium, magnesium, phosphate, sodium, calcium) are extremely important as they carry the messages from your nerves to our muscles telling them to contract. Sport drinks also help to reduce recovery time by rapidly restoring muscle glycogen and by increasing fluid absorption. The optimal sugar (carbohydrate) solution in a sports drink is 6-8%. A greater than 10% sugar solution will slow down fluid absorption and the time it takes for the stomach to empty, causing nausea, cramps or diarrhea. Less fluid absorption means a greater risk of dehydration and a decrease in strength and performance. Therefore, sport drinks can be a valuable addition to your training as they are scientifically formulated to help restore the essential fluids, energy and minerals lost during exercise. Remember however that not all sports drinks are created the same, read the label to ensure it contains electrolytes and is not just a sporty looking can of sugar water!
