RCMP are investigating a suspected murder-suicide in Airdrie which is just north of Calgary involving the mother of a young daughter and a championship bodybuilder.

Police say the case started when an officer was asked to check on the woman’s well-being and made the grisly discovery of her dead body.

“From the physical scene itself, it was clear to the first responder that they were dealing with a homicide,”

said RCMP spokesman Sgt. Tim Taniguchi.Police have not released the victim’s name but said she is in her mid-’30s and is the single mother of a young child currently safe with family members.

Sources identify the victim as Andrea Conroy and the suspect as her boyfriend Rick Doucette, a nationsl-level bodybuilder who competed in 2010. The child was not present at the time of the murder.

As part of the investigation, police stormed a home in the Big Springs neighbourhood of Airdrie on Saturday morning but say it was unoccupied. On Saturday afternoon, crime scene investigators were combing through the residence.
The male suspect’s body was discovered in southern Alberta on Saturday.

Conroy’s neighbours said they have not seen the woman — whom they describe as the mother of one daughter — in at least two days.
One neighbour said the victim had not picked up her Wednesday or Friday newspapers and failed to clean off the sidewalk from the Thursday night snowfall.
As well, the neighbour said the house lights have been turned on and the blinds have not been shut since Wednesday.

“It’s very strange of her,” said the neighbour, who wished not to be named. “ I can’t remember the last time we saw her. It’s really too bad.”

Police are not releasing the cause of death for investigative reasons and can’t speak about possible motives.

“It’s so early in the investigation at this time it would be inappropriate for me to speculate on what the motive was. That is a major part of the investigation,” said Taniguchi.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday.
