Coenzyme Q10

Q. What’s the buzz on Coenzyme Q10?

A. In many ways, Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is one of the most powerful nutrients in our bodies. It plays a critical role in the proper functioning of your cells as both an energy producer and as an antioxidant. It’s crucial to maintaining the health of your brain, heart, immune system, eye health, gum health, and more. Because our CoQ10 levels naturally begin to decline as early as age 20, CoQ10 also gets a lot of attention from the anti-aging crowd. Our bodies are supposed to make it, and we can also get it from our diet. In addition to aging playing a role in its decline, CoQ10 levels are also affected by many drugs, including statin drugs for high cholesterol, some hypertension drugs, and others. Because CoQ10 is involved in both energy production and as an antioxidant in every cell, the full impact of CoQ10 deficiencies or insufficiencies are still unknown. There is, however, substantial research to suggest that supplementation can have significant benefits in wellness care and as an intervention.
