How To Get Sponsored

Q. I’m new to this whole working out thing, but I’m gonna compete this year and I’m looking to get hooked up with a supplement contract. Also, I’m available for any magazine cover shoots if you can line that up. Thanks, Paul.

A. First of all, congratulations on your dream of being the next big bodybuilding star. Like all professional sports, it’s not easy to make it to the top, but with enough hard work and dedication, anything is possible. Before you go down the wrong path, I’m gonna give you a quick list of dos and don’ts for making it in the bodybuilding/fitness industry.

1. Do compete in at least a few shows first to gain experience before starting to approach a company looking for sponsorship. If you can work your way up to the National level, the odds of you landing a deal can significantly improve.

2. Do offer to complete a transformation for a supplement company in conjunction with your show. Contact the athlete rep from one of the companies and send photos of your current condition along with photos of yourself in contest shape. This is a great opportunity to at least get free product and show expenses covered. This is always a good start for an athlete just trying to get into the game.

3. Do work to build your own personal brand. Your odds of securing a deal can improve if you have already built up a fan following. Many of the figure, fitness, and bikini competitors do a great job of this, and it’s time for the bodybuilders to step it up. This means taking advantage of social media (your own blog, website, Twitter account, YouTube channel, etc.) and offering great value to bodybuilding fans. Also on a related note, contact one of the industry photographers and set up a shoot for after your next contest. A portfolio of photos taken by an industry pro such as Jason Breeze or Judi Stone is a great asset for you to market your services to companies in the industry.

4. Do attend a couple of industry trade shows. If you want to be a part of the industry, this is a great way to learn more about who the players are. Visit the various booths and chat up as many athletes (and staff) as possible. You’ll always pick up a few insights that you can use for the future.

5. Don’t accept any offer from anyone without completely reading through it and seeking legal counsel. Too many athletes get excited at finally receiving an offer and are quick to sign a contract without reading the fine print. Don’t fall into this trap.

6. Don’t get discouraged by hearing the word “no.” Rejection is simply part of the game in the sport of bodybuilding, and to make it, you’re gonna have to be mentally tough. Just as you’re dedicated to the weights and to making sure your nutrition is on par, you will also have to show the same type of dedication to making a name for yourself in the world of bodybuilding. It won’t be an easy road, but with enough perseverance, you just might become the next big thing!
