Book Review: The Sports Supplement Bible for Health and Fitness
By: Dan Kennedy
Will Brink—who is he and why do supplement companies pay attention when they hear his name? In case you’ve been living under a dumbbell or are heavily into contest hibernation mode while prepping for this year’s Canadian Nationals, his name deserves your undivided attention as well. Will has penned articles for the majority of bodybuilding and fitness magazines. He’s authored Priming the Anabolic Environment, been a supplement formulation consultant for several companies, and, more recently, been involved with training elite members of SWAT teams. You may have even viewed his extremely informative YouTube channel. Will Brink is probably best known for his exposé on the contaminants in Chinese creatine. Brink’s resume for the supplement industry is all-encompassing as he has pretty much seen it all and done it all.
In his latest contribution to the fitness world, The Sports Supplement Bible for Health and Fitness, Will Brink cuts through the universe of BS supplements (that’s “bullshit” and “bro science”) and exposes the top supplement ingredients. If you pick up many fitness magazines, I’m sure you’ll agree that it looks more like a catalog than a source of training and dieting information. How does a consumer know what works and what is worthless? Can you believe the fancy ads? Can you believe the gym buzz? I would say I would trust Will Brink. I was once told by a pro bodybuilder that “you can’t budget bodybuild.” Those words couldn’t have been truer. Will’s work will guide you through the most well-known supplement ingredients and reveal what you should invest in to get optimal results that will save you money. In The Sports Supplement Bible, Will covers categories such as amino acids, protein powders, and testosterone boosters. If you want to know the facts on creatine, L-glutamine, BCAAs, soy protein, or CLA, you’ll find them in Will’s book. Even though the SSB is heavily based on actual scientific literature (that’s right, no “bro science”!), Will dumbs down the scientific jargon so that even the most hardcore musclehead will easily comprehend each review.
Will breaks down each supplement review into five easy-to-understand segments: “What is it?”, “What is it supposed to do?”, “What does the research say for athletic performance?”, “What about real-world athletic performance?” and “Will Brink’s Recommendations.” This approach is what I really appreciate about Will’s work—it’s simple and straightforward. Will concludes each review with the relevant scientific references so that the reader can further investigate the ingredient in question. The reader will learn the actual scientific amounts to elicit positive athletic benefits. No longer will supplement companies be able to hide behind “proprietary blends,” which tends more often than not to be an eloquent way of saying “pixie dust.”
The small price of this book will easily pay off with wiser supplement purchases and will result in better gym results. Would I recommend Will’s book, The Sports Supplement Bible? Without hesitation! What Bill Phillips did with his Anabolic Reference Guide in the ‘90s, Will has surpassed with The Sports Supplement Bible. This book is a must-have for every supplement purchaser.
