Common Mistakes When Trying To Get Lean

Q. What do you think are commonly made mistakes when someone is trying to lean out and get ripped to the bone?

A. I find the most common mistake among people who are trying to get totally shredded is that they think that they need to eat way less than they should actually be eating. While eating less is valid with regard to needing to create a calorie deficiency—to burn more than you take in—this still doesn’t mean you should be eating less than your body needs for fuel or waiting over three hours to eat. If you’re undereating and waiting 3.5 to 5 hours between meals, you may actually slow down your metabolism as your body will likely go into starvation mode.

For optimal fat loss, try splitting your meals up into five to seven smaller portions a day. This keeps your metabolism constantly working and will definitely help you be less hungry through the day. Remember that when you starve yourself, your body holds onto any fat it has, and it has actually been shown that you will lose muscle instead. Try using a BMR calculator to calculate your daily calorie needs, and then subtract 500 from that number if you want to lose about a pound per week. Combine this with a solid weights and cardio program, and you should see some phenomenal results. It’s also very important to know which foods work best for you when dieting and to ensure you’re timing your carbs properly.
