Bryan Haycock's Supplement Stack
What is your supplement stack looking like?
I take supplements not only for bodybuilding purposes but also for general health and, at times, condition-specific reasons. For bodybuilding, the list of supplements I use is short, and it’s one I've used for many years. First and foremost is whey protein. I drink a protein drink one hour before training and immediately afterwards. There’s ample research showing that gains are faster when sufficient essential aminos are supplied just before and/or after training.
To boost the anabolic effect of the whey protein, I add several grams of leucine. Although there are some studies showing little additional benefit from added leucine when complete protein sources are used, many more show that it’s of value. Besides, the mechanism is straightforward, and the price is low enough that I give it the benefit of the doubt.
Depending on whether I’m trying to put on weight or take off fat, I will add carbs to my protein drinks. I prefer vanilla protein for the most part; this allows me to add whatever other things I want. I usually use powdered Gatorade as my carb source because it doesn't have fructose.
The next supplement I've used for well over 15 years now is creatine. I take it before training to enhance its delivery to muscle tissue—nothing fancy, just plain old creatine monohydrate. I do, however, prefer the fine mesh or “micronized” material.
Finally I use a number of different things occasionally for their healthful benefits. I use krill oil for my omega-3s. I take a multivitamin/ mineral, and I might take some extra vitamins/minerals now and then depending on my mood.
