Why did you become a personal trainer?
I was always very active growing up, playing various team sports and being naturally athletic, I excelled at most of them. I competed in amateur kickboxing, and boxing for many years. I gave up fighting when I started having kids as the training schedule was far too intense.
Because I enjoyed the competition aspect of sports, I decided to enter the fitness competition world. I was able to train on my own time and work out a schedule that worked out best into my own busy life with 4 children, and a full-time career as a police officer.
I started personal training because so many of my friends and co-workers were inspired by me and wanted to learn from me. In return, I became inspired and motivated to pursue this path because of the lives I have touched and changed over the years. I realized that personal training was giving me more satisfaction that policing. I wanted to help change more lives so I left my career to pursue this dream. It is because of my clients, and the love and gratitude I get from their successes that I continue to do what I do. For many, the transformation is not just physical. It’s mental and emotional as well.
What do you think is the reason your clients gravitated to you?
All my clients can definitely relate to me on many levels. I am a mom of four young children (ages 5, 7, 9, and 11 years old), and run 2 businesses (my online transformation business www.nichellelaus.com, and Optimum Training Centre, my personal training facility in Toronto, Ont. www.otctoronto.com). Having been a police officer for 15 years, I know the struggles of shift work, and trying to balance a career, marriage, and children. My clients love that I diverse, versatile, friendly, empathetic, balanced, but yet tough when I need to be.
Greatest client success story.
Although I have many success stories, I would have to say my most memorable is my first client. I wasn’t expecting to start training clients at all, but one of my co-workers at the time asked me to train her and I told her she would be my ‘guinea-pig”. I guided her along her entire journey and she lost 80 pounds, and competed in her first fitness competition. Others were so impressed that I started to coach on a regular basis. I have helped transform hundreds of women over the past 7 years and have been so grateful to have a successful team of supportive women under my guidance and direction.

As a high performance athlete and competitor, I know what it means to train hard and push my limits. I train early in the morning because that is the only time that fits into my busy schedule with 4 young boys. My favorite EFX product is Karbolyn Hydrate.
