The Cookie Gets a Makeover

The options are endless—when it comes to protein snacks, at least. Optimum Nutrition, one of the most recognizable supplement companies in the world, continues to deliver superior products for the health and fitness market. Gone are the days of chalky protein bars! Now, the variety of delicious and macro-friendly protein snacks that Optimum Nutrition offers is dizzying.

The newest product to join the Optimum family is Protein Wafers. These protein snacks are similar in size to a standard protein bar, offering another great option for people who love snacking as much as they love maintaining a great physique. This healthful cookie option not only tastes amazing but also offers a new take on protein bars with a unique texture. Thank you, creative masterminds at Optimum Nutrition!

Like a Cookie, But Better

On its own, a wafer is a thin, sweet, crisp biscuit. However, many cookie companies layer them with some form of cream to create a stacked dessert. Obviously, most of these are found in the cookie aisle of the grocery store and yield more fat and sugar than protein. Optimum Nutrition saw these treats as a new vehicle for protein, and its creation has made our team of tasters incredibly happy.

Not only do they taste delicious, but they help satisfy cravings from two angles. The flavours answer the prayers of anyone with a sweet tooth, and the mix of textures is a welcome change from typical protein bars. Speaking of flavours, Protein Wafers are available in four different options: Mocha Crème, Chocolate Raspberry Crème, Chocolate Crème, and Vanilla Crème, all sandwiched between the layers of wafer cookies.

Protein-Packed Dessert

Each package of Protein Wafers contains two wafers, each with two layers of cream sandwiched between three layers of cookie. Each has a chocolate coating on the base and a drizzle of chocolate on top, pleasing chocoholics everywhere.

Now, the question on the minds of our fitness-fanatics: How are the macros? Can we make them fit? On average, each serving of two wafers delivers 200 calories with 15 grams of protein and 9 grams of fat (6 grams of saturated fat). When it comes to carbohydrates, each serving contains 14 grams, of which 6 grams are from sugars.

The protein is a blend of dairy sources including milk protein isolate, whey protein isolate, and casein. Additionally, there is a small amount of pea protein isolate. Along with sugar, small amounts of fructose and sucralose sweeten the wafers and cream. Rounding out the taste profile and providing the chocolate touches are cocoa liquor and cocoa butter. Don’t reach for your proof of age; the cocoa liquor isn’t an alcoholic item. It’s a product derived from cocoa beans to make either a solid or semisolid base for chocolate treats—in this case, the coating on the bottom and the drizzle on top.

A big difference between Protein Wafers and your standard protein bar is that Protein Wafers are definitely not as dense. Each serving is about 20 or 30 grams lighter than a typical protein bar, with all the macros proportionately scaled down. With fewer carbohydrates per serving, Protein Wafers might fit more people’s macros as a daily snack than a typical protein bar.

One of the best benefits of Protein Wafers is that they’re easily portion controlled. If you need to satisfy a sudden craving for something sweet but don’t want to eat too much, you can simply eat one wafer and save the other for another day. This cuts the macros in half, making it even more diet-friendly.

Light, Airy, and Crunchy

Protein Wafers make for a great snack because of their lightness—while you’ll feel satisfied, they won’t leave you feeling heavy. One major contributor to the lightness of these snacks is the absence of fibre. Many protein bars rely on various forms of fibre to create their texture and counter out the net carb content, which also makes them dense. Without any trace of fibre, Protein Wafers maintain their light and airy appeal.

As mentioned before, the blend of textures is a nice change for a protein product. Although most protein bars are a uniform soft and chewy texture, the wafers in Optimum Nutrition’s Protein Wafers offer a subtle crunch to each bite as a contrast to the smooth cream filling.

Time for a Coffee Break

Our panel of expert taste testers had a hard time picking their favorite flavour of the four. With a split between the Mocha Crème and Chocolate Raspberry Crème options, it was impossible to choose just one to go with (we actually think some of our panel voted for more than one, doing us no favours in the long run). But the bottom line is that you can’t go wrong with any of the four.

We also have a pro tip for all the coffee lovers out there. When you’re hitting that afternoon slump and need a snack to go with a jolt of caffeine, Protein Wafers are incredible to dip in your drink. And, if you get fancy with your caffeine, the Vanilla Crème option goes perfectly with a cappuccino—you can thank us later.
