Inside the Rumor: Is MuscleTech’s Parent Company Iovate Being Sold?

By Roger “Rock” Lockridge, Managing Editor

There are a lot of things you can count on at big fitness events, a lot of people, a lot of big moments, and a lot of rumors.

One rumor circulating throughout the 2026 Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, OH, suggested that a potential sale of Iovate Health Sciences International Inc.—parent company to brands including MuscleTech, Six Star Nutrition, Hydroxycut, and Purely Inspired—may be for underway, and that Fit Foods LP, the parent company of MUTANT, could be throwing its hat into the ring to acquire the company.

Iovate Files for Bankruptcy Protection and Faces Legal Issues

On September 12, 2025, The Logic reported that Iovate filed for bankruptcy protection following a revelation that they were over $200 million in debt. Iovate lost a major legal battle against Orgain, which claimed Iovate copied its product labeling. A judge ordered Iovate to pay $12.5 million, leading to a cash flow crisis when retailers like Walmart began withholding payments to satisfy the judgment.

It is worth noting that as of this writing, Iovate continues to operate while the court-appointed monitor oversees the process of evaluating potential options. Muscle Insider reached out to Iovate for a statement regarding the potential sale of the company, but we have not received a reply as of this writing. If that changes, we will update this article with a statement if one is provided.

Why a Potential Acquisition Would Make Strategic Sense

Even though no potential buyer has been publicly confirmed, industry observers understand why speculation around companies like Fit Foods has emerged. Iovate remains one of the most recognizable legacy companies in sports nutrition, with global brands such as MuscleTech, Hydroxycut, Six Star Pro Nutrition, and Purely Inspired distributed in more than 90 countries.

Because of those factors, it is not unusual for rumors to circulate about potential buyers whenever a large supplement company enters restructuring. At this stage, however, there has been no official confirmation that Fit Foods—or any other company—is actively pursuing an acquisition.

Is Fit Foods a Potential Buyer?

Following the news of Fit Foods celebrating 30 years in business and bringing in a new investor, which combined with the issues surrounding Iovate may have created the perfect storm for the rumors to be speculating about a potential buyout.

It makes sense to industry insiders and long-term customers why the rumor would circulate throughout the supplement world. For a generation of bodybuilding fans, MuscleTech was the premiere brand that sponsored the Who’s Who of the sport. At its peak in the early 2000s, the company was arguably the most dominant brand in bodybuilding, sponsoring multiple Mr. Olympia champions and helping define the modern era of performance supplement marketing.

MUTANT’s Reputation for Quality and Growth

For many retailers and consumers, MUTANT represents a modern evolution of the type of hardcore supplement brand that MuscleTech once embodied during the height of its dominance in bodybuilding culture.

In 2026, MUTANT is in that position with a roster that includes six-time Ms. Olympia Andrea Shaw, two-time Olympia 212 champion Shaun Clarida, Hall of Famer Shawn Ray, Sergio Oliva Jr, and Strongman great Mitchell Hooper.

For many longtime bodybuilding fans, MUTANT now occupies a similar position in the industry that MuscleTech once held during the peak of its dominance in the early 2000s. While the future of MuscleTech is still unknown, Muscle Insider will continue to monitor this developing story and share updates when appropriate, so fans and readers will know the truth when they see it.
