Men’s Open Bodybuilding

1st – Brandon Curry

Curry is someone that I have been watching since I first started training in high school. I remember watching his BSN Unleashed videos and workouts, then going and trying them. It’s good to see Curry back in true form, you can really tell he has built upon the package he brought to Brazil in 2013, where he took the Arnold Brasil crown, and he has definitely taken some of the disappointment from the last year and worked on the little details he missed.
When looking at Curry on stage yesterday, he looked full and symmetrical, but most of all he looked confident. He looked like he knew he was going to win. He brought a package that was even and solid throughout. I cannot say that he brought his best package but I can say the best part was the symmetry of it all. It all went together like it should. You cannot blame the judges for their overall choice.

2nd – Johnnie Jackson
When I think of Johnnie Jackson, I think old school bodybuilder, but more than that I think powerlifter. The guy has an 800lb squat, not something you see a ton of bodybuilders doing.
In my honest opinion, up top, Johnnie wins the show. The muscle fullness, and the size, along with the conditioning really came out… in his upper body. What got Johnnie 2nd were his legs and glutes. They were just too smooth. Everything else came in tight and ready to go, his legs and glutes came in a few weeks out.

3rd – Fred Smalls
“Biggie” sure did look big. He looked big, round and well, not in the best shape. He looked light years better in Brazil this year when he took 7th. That doesn’t sound right when you say it out loud, but if you just take a look at a comparison shot, he didn’t come as dialed in, in Toronto. Don’t get me wrong, the guy looked solid, symmetry was there, and so was size, he just needed that final touch of conditioning.

4th – Ibrahim Fahim
From the back, Fahim won the show for me. His back double biceps shot was amazing. I am a huge proponent of legs (if you hadn’t already noticed) and his hamstrings and glutes came in tight and ready to go. In all honesty, he looked great, his front just didn’t coordinate with his back. This discrepancy really comes out during his front double biceps pose, you can really see he is softer in the mid-section and his quads.  He should feel good about this placing and build upon it. This is a guy with a TON of potential.

5th – Iain Valliere
Here there just wasn’t enough chisel in the clay. Iain wasn’t quite ready in my opinion. The size is obviously there, but not the conditioning. Valliere’s best pose is his hands on hip most muscular. This showcases his size and overall symmetry, but as we move to the side and the rear poses, you see that he really needs some extra time to work out the details that seem overlooked. This is another athlete that looked better at a lower placement in any earlier show this year.

Pro 212 Bodybuilding

1st – Zane Watson
Talk about a huge jump in conditioning in one year. It is honestly night and day difference between 2014 and 2015 for Zane. I honestly cannot say many negative things about Watson’s physique. Simply put, he was the best on the stage. His conditioning was far superior to 3-8th places and his muscle bellies were larger than Clarida. Watson was a clear choice to win the 212s… in this show.

2nd – Shaun Clarida
The giant killer looked great! Clarida is one of those guys that you know is going to bring a conditioned package to the stage every single time, and he did in Toronto as well. What hurts Clarida is his size, he looked phenomenal, but Zane brought a bigger package. It had to come down to size when talking about who took the 212s, because the conditioning between 1 and 2 was quite honestly a draw.

3rd – Oliver Adzievski
I really don’t understand this placing. In all honesty the night and day comparison between 3rd and 1st place is a bit too much of a discrepancy. In my opinion, Adzievski takes 5th or below. There is definitely some solid leg development, but I’ll be honest, I just don’t see the conditioning that there needs to be to place top 3 at a pro show.

4th – Mboya Edwards
If Mboya could have dialed in the midsection more, he has 3rd in my opinion. His rear poses are great! Striations in the glutes, solid conditioning and depth in the back. I honestly see a great competitor. Even the front and side poses show a good deal of conditioning and detail. The midsection is just sloppy. I’ll be honest though… third place?

5th – Raul Carrasco-Jimenez
Carrasco-Jimenez just didn’t bring the right package to the stage. He didn’t have the conditioning that the judges look for, or really the overall size. Even though this is the 212 division, the roundness of the muscle belly is key to success. In his side poses, there were glimpses of the conditioning that is expected, but as we look to the rear and even some front poses, you will notice a smoothness that normally won’t get you in the top 5. His conditioning in Toronto, was about that of the 2014 Olympia, where he took home 15th.
