Acupuncture Helps WIth Depression

QUESTION: In Scott Welch's "Uncensored Column" this month, he mentions that many top bodybuilding champions use Acupuncture to treat injuries. What's your take on acupuncture?

ANSWER: Research shows the ancient practice of Acupuncture may have value in another area in addition to sports injuries! Researchers at the University of Arizona at Tucson split 34 depressed women into 3 groups: 12 women received acupuncture specifically designed for depression, 11 got acupuncture designed to treat other conditions like back pain or headache, and 11 got no treatment. After 8 weeks, the women who received the depression-specific acupuncture reported a reduction in symptoms 4 times higher than that seen in the other acupuncture group. When all the women in the study were placed on the specific program for another 8 weeks, nearly two-thirds of them showed complete relief of their depression!  While traditional acupuncturists believe the technique restores balance between yin and yang forces within the body, some Western researchers theorize it works by releasing endorphins which are simply natural body chemicals that relieve pain and enhance feelings of pleasure.
